In the last few days I had the opportunity to try out iTop Screen Recorder. As a Mac user, I am familiar with screen programs such as Screenflow and Camtasia. For the most part, Screenflow is pretty foolproof, at least for people like me. However, I’m curious to see if I enjoy using the iTop […]
I get it… All this talk of “EQ” and “gain setting” or “parallel packaging” can be intimidating. However, if you break these difficult and “scary” tasks into small pieces, you will be able to handle them as soon as possible. In this guide, I’m going to focus on using EQs in your songs. […]
You’ve heard it time and time again. “Music sounds better (warmer, tighter, sharper, etc.) when it’s routed through analog equipment.” Why? Analog devices add richness, harmonic distortion and compression to your sound. Continuous signal shaping with tube amps, preamps, compressors and equalizers adds a certain magic to the sound – giving […]

In 2016, I made a career change from being a full-time music producer to spending more time in digital marketing. It doesn’t matter, I’m still making music. Nowadays I usually work outside the studio. Wherever I worked, I carried a MIDI controller keyboard with me. Whenever I wanted a break […]
When it comes to video editing for TikTok, YouTube or music videos, one thing is certain. We live in a world full of content. Even as a music producer, you can’t avoid making videos. All that remains is the full version of the song. So how do you do an instrumental song or karaoke?
Backing tracks are created in the studio and are often called “minus one” tracks because they are missing one track. In our case, it’s the vocal track. The only way to completely remove a vocal part from the music is if you have a multi-tracked version of the song, which is unlikely.

However, there are ways to remove or significantly reduce vocals from any stereo track file to create a nearly perfect instrumental or karaoke version. This guide shows several different ways to use popular free and paid audio editors. These methods can include audio, speech phase or cancellation, EQ adjustment, and the use of professional machine learning tools to produce the best results.
Moises is a web, Android and iOS application that can extract vocals from many songs using artificial intelligence. The free app is limited to how many times you can use it per month, while the premium option costs $3.99 per month, or nearly $40 for an annual subscription.
Like some of the other apps we’ve reviewed, Moises uses Deezer’s open source MIT-licensed Spleeter tool to perform music searches. It uses advanced machine learning to divide a song into two, four, or five different bases, e.g. Each of these options allows you to extract vocals from any song. To learn more about Spleeter, check out our complete Moises user guide.
Developed by Geraldo Ramos, Moises started as a web tool for desktop and mobile environments, but has recently created apps for Android and iOS. To see how it works on a smartphone or tablet and for links to download the app, see our full Moises user guide.

Splitter.ai is a desktop and mobile web application that works similarly to Moises in that it also uses Spleeter’s machine learning to split song stems. However, there is only a two or five barrel model to choose from, not a four barrel separator. Splitter.ai is free if you don’t want to buy a browser extension, currently $19 but usually $29, useful for YouTube videos. Watch the video below to see how Splitter.ai works.
Acoustica Acon Digital is a paid program for macOS and Windows that costs $199.90 for the Premium Edition or $59.90 for the Standard Edition. Both have a 30 day free trial. Versions 7.2 were released in March 2020 and feature the new Remix tool on both software levels. Like Moises, this tool uses Spleeter models to split stems, allowing you to split a song into five different stems.
With the new Remix tool, you can remove the vocal track from others such as drums, bass and piano. Also, if you load an entire mix into a multitrack session, the program will split it into separate tracks for you, making splitting sounds even easier. Watch this video to learn how to use it:
Izotopen RX 8 is a paid program for macOS and Windows with three different versions, but only two of them have the audio removal tool you need: Standard and Advanced. The former is on sale now for $299 (regularly $399) and the latter for $999 (regularly $1,199), each with a 30-day free trial.

RX 8 has a Music Rebalancing tool that does all the song separation. We can tell that he doesn’t use Spleeter, but he has his own AI that does magic. And as the internet says, RX 8 extracts vocals from songs better than any Spleeter-based instrument. Given the price of the RX 8, this is not surprising. The following video contains an introduction.
Audacity, a free program for Linux, macOS, and Windows, provides an easy way to reduce voices in a digital song file. Actually, there are different ways. First, you can use the Invert tool to remove most of the voices from an MP3 or other digital audio file. Split the song in half, flip the other side and you change the sound to mono.
Audacity has a new feature called the Voice Removal and Isolation effect. It is easier to use and works much better than the inversion method. It’s not perfect though, and you’ll have more success with one of the tools above. Watch the video below to see both methods in action in Audacity.
In the video below at 1:25 you can see another example of using the Noise Removal and Isolation tool in Audacity.
Best Apps To Remove Vocals From A Song
Avid Pro Tools for macOS and Windows, like Audacity, offers tools that can be used to remove audio by reversing half of a song to reduce vocals. Unlike Audacity, however, Pro Tools is expensive.
There are now three different levels: Pro Tools First, Pro Tools and Pro Tools Ultimate. The first one is free, but it may not have the necessary audio editing tools. Pro Tools costs $29.99 per month and Ultimate costs $79.99 per month and is the best option for removing vocals. The final level has a free trial version.
Once the video is old, see below how to remove vocals from a song in Pro Tools. It uses Pro Tools LE, which is now discontinued, but should be very similar in Pro Tools and Pro Tools Ultimate. Updated versions of Pro Tools may have even better ways to remove vocals.
