To create a podcast, remove pauses from a webinar recording, or add effects to a video soundtrack, you need an audio editing program. It allows you to record audio, reduce the file size, convert it to a web-friendly format and clean up the old recording.
Best Audio Application
And there’s no shortage of recorders to choose from. The choice depends on what you hope to achieve, your budget and overall skill level.
The Best Digital Audio Workstations (daws) For 2024
After reviewing more than 50 apps and conducting extensive testing of dozens of competitors, these are my picks for the best audio editors.
All of our best app libraries are written by people who have spent most of their careers using, testing, and writing about software. We spend dozens of hours researching and testing apps, using each app as intended and evaluating it against the benchmarks we set for the category. We are never paid for placement in our articles by any app or for links to any site – we appreciate the trust our readers place in us to offer authentic reviews of the categories and apps we review. For more information on our process, read the full overview of how we select programs to be featured on the blog.
The best audio recorders are designed solely with audio processing in mind. Many digital audio workstations (DAVs) have audio processing capabilities along with much more extensive features, which can make them more bulky and expensive. I’ve only chosen real recorders to include in this section, so you won’t find software like GarageBand, Ableton Live or AVID Pro Tools on this list.
Some of these options bring something unique to the table, but there was a set of basic criteria that each application had to keep in mind in order to be considered for the list.

To test the programs, I made some basic changes to the waveform display, applied effects such as noise reduction and file export, and then tested all the individual features. After fiddling with dozens of apps, these are the best voice recorders I’ve found.
Adobe Audition is a powerful audio recorder that continues to push industry standards forward, with a pricing model to match. The program is updated every year with new features and increased compatibility with the latest versions of macOS and Windows.
Audition can act as both a single-track recorder and a multi-track mixer for recording and layering audio. It is a complete digital audio workstation with support for simultaneous recording of multiple sources and external plug-ins (VST, VST3 and AU). Adobe has also added best-in-class audio restoration tools, which allow you to capture a sample of “noise” in a recording and then remove the unwanted audio field from the entire file. You can also use adaptive noise reduction (which detects unwanted sounds) and automatic or spot correction to remove pops and clicks.
You can save frequently used functions so they are always one click away in the favorites menu. Easily modify Audition’s interface to suit your current projects, with options for audio and video editing, broadcast production, and dual-screen setups. Templates are also available to speed up many editing tasks, including radio dubbing, podcasts or surround sound production. Audition supports video (including mono, stereo and 5.1) with the ability to view reference video while editing.
Best Audio Software And It’s Free!!!
All of these features make Adobe Audition a very capable, if expensive, audio recorder. Although complex in nature, Adobe’s video tutorial series introduces many features in an easily digestible manner. And if you sign up for an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, you can send audio recordings from the Premiere Pro video editor directly to Adobe Audition for editing and processing.
Adobe Audition Price: $20.99 per month (billed annually) for one app plan; $54.99 per month (billed annually) for a Creative Cloud plan with access to the full suite of Adobe applications, including Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Illustrator.
If you’re looking for an alternative to Adobe Audition, Steinberg WaveLab Elements is a complex, feature-rich audio recorder that works under a standalone license ($99). Although it is primarily intended for music production, it includes many tools for editing all kinds of audio on Windows or macOS, and you do not need to sign up for a monthly subscription to enjoy it.
Audacity is the most powerful free audio editor money can’t buy. Includes a full set of editing and mastering tools, including destructive waveform and multi-layer blending. Despite using an open source development model, Audacity includes many features typically associated with paid products.
Best Way To Record Zoom Podcast?
The editor has a collection of effects at its disposal, including a compressor, noise reduction and an automatic repair tool. There is also support for external sound effects and plug-ins in VST, AU (on Mac), LADSPA and LV2 formats. You can also download a bunch of plugins from the Audacity Plugins database. And thanks to its open roots, Audacity supports importing and exporting a variety of formats, such as Ogg Vorbis, FLAC and M4A.
A simple and somewhat clunky interface holds it back compared to some of its competitors. You also can’t record multiple audio sources simultaneously or perform non-destructive editing. Since it comes without a price tag, I can forgive the limitations. Audacity is good enough for the vast majority of users who simply want a simple audio editing or enhancement tool.
Rate another free voice recorder with support for macOS, Windows and Linux. The program is very similar to Audacity, although the focus is on editing a single-track waveform. You may prefer a more streamlined interface, especially for quick changes or if you won’t be using a lot of plugins.
Acoustica Standard Edition offers more than the average free audio recorder in a package that won’t cost you a fortune. This is a high-resolution audio recorder, with support for 32-bit audio and sample rates up to 384 kHz. You can use Acoustica for single-track waveforms or multi-track mixes where you can loop, stretch and fade clips on the timeline.
Coda Audio Gives Access To ‘application Examples’
Basic effects include limiting, an equalizer, and a set of audio restoration tools to remove hiss, pops, and hums from your recordings. Acoustica also includes support for external plug-ins in VST, VST3 and AU formats (on macOS). Each of them can be linked, saved and distributed with one click to multiple sessions and files. Create your own effects within Process Chain on the main interface by clicking the + button to add EQs, limits, plugins and more. Acoustica is also compliant with common broadcast standards, making it easy to work with video soundtracks.
Acoustica’s neat array of useful icons, dark color scheme, and tabbed interface for working with multiple files should keep you from being overwhelmed by its extensive feature set. If you want more “professional” features, Acoustica Premium Edition offers even better sound restoration tools, support for multi-channel 7.1 surround sound, and spectral modulation.
Hindenburg Pro 2 is a multi-track audio recorder intended for professionals who produce podcasts and radio content. The app can act as a mobile recording studio, allowing you to connect different tracks to different inputs, or as an editor to organize files you’ve already recorded elsewhere. It’s perfect for interview compilation or podcast production because it takes care of some of the more technical aspects of production for you.
One of the main features of the app is its ability to automatically adjust levels. As soon as you finish recording or importing a waveform, watch as Hindenburg Pro 2 automatically increases or decreases the volume of the track to match modern audio standards. You can then use the built-in profile, an automatic equalizer to enhance vocal tracks, to optimize the sound for publishing.
