(This article covers Special Issue Smartphones and Wearable Sensors for Monitoring Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability)

Since its creation in 2013, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has become the standard for short-range wireless communication in many consumers, including specialized equipment. In this study, we analyzed the security features available in the Bluetooth LE standard and measured the features used in two BLE wearable devices (a Fitbit heart rate bracelet and a Polar chest heart rate monitor) and a BLE keyboard to check the security of the BLE standard. used in equipment. In this study, we used ComProbe Bluetooth Protocol Analyzer, along with ComProbe software to capture BLE traffic on our device. We found that the standard provides security measures, because the Bluetooth Special Group does not require companies to comply with the standard, some companies do not comply with security measures, privacy and possibly security issues for customers and the public. We propose the creation of a Bluetooth Safety Facts Label (BSFL) to be placed on the commercial packaging of Bluetooth / BLE devices and conclude that a better system is needed to inform users about the security and privacy of the devices they receive. and use and educate the public on how to protect themselves when purchasing connected devices.

Bluetooth LE (Low Energy), also known as Bluetooth Smart, has been widely used in many technologies since its launch in 2010. From Apple Watches to heart rate sensors, Bluetooth LE can be used as a communication system with low energy consumption. Fitness trackers and wearables, an undoubted niche in the Bluetooth LE community, have become commonplace [1]. Bluetooth LE is also used for office occupant tracking [2], building emergency control [3], intelligent energy management [4] and many other applications [5]. With millions of devices using Bluetooth LE technology (such as smartphones and other devices), security questions arise. Considering the type of data that can be transmitted by low-energy devices, which can range from heartbeat to geolocation data, security and privacy considerations must be taken into account when acquiring a BLE device.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) is a standards organization that oversees the development of the Bluetooth standard and licenses it to companies. In 2010, the Bluetooth SIG merged LE with the Bluetooth Core Specification 4.0 to provide features that allow for lower power consumption, lower complexity, and lower cost compared to Base Rate/Renewal Data (BR/EDR) [6]. That is, Bluetooth LE compares to other versions of Bluetooth by reducing the cost of computing devices. The LE specification design allows for easy manufacturing, but the basic structure of the device follows the standard model. The specification includes the ability for LE devices to implement several security measures, including the integration of standards, encryption, authentication and random addresses, which can be used to ensure the security and privacy of the information sent during the connection. Bluetooth SIG recommends but does not require that the security option be enabled. Manufacturers can determine whether safeguards are in place to protect consumers.

The first phone to use the 4.0 specification was the iPhone 4S released in October 2011. The Bluetooth SIG has since released improvements, including the Bluetooth 4.1 specification released in 2013, the Bluetooth 4.2 specification in 2014 and Bluetooth 5 in 2016. Bluetooth 4.1 has improved the technology. . power management compared to 4.0 and allows devices to be both hubs and endpoints. It also introduces BR/EDR Secure Connection and LE Privacy 1.1. Bluetooth 4.2 increases speed and provides better security for LE in a secure connection for pairs. It also allows IPv6 connectivity for Bluetooth LE devices [7]. Bluetooth 5 is a term commonly used to mean Bluetooth 5.0. It provides more and faster data transfer and the ability to send audio between two devices simultaneously. Since the launch of 5.0, Bluetooth SIG has released versions 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Version 5.1 improves speed and reliability, provides accurate location detection and introduces Random Advertising Channel Indexing for better advertising. Bluetooth 5.2 has an isochronous channel, allowing multiple Bluetooth devices to connect to a single source, better performance, and LE power management [8]. Finally, Bluetooth 5.3 brings many improvements to improve reliability, efficiency, and user experience in a variety of Bluetooth-enabled devices [9].

Although most smartphones incorporate LE technology in their latest releases, many other devices are not built with the latest models. Since the communication between two Bluetooth devices (according to the Bluetooth standard) is determined by the oldest Bluetooth version used by the device for communication, a good part of the current Bluetooth LE communication is based on 4.0 or 4.1 technology. In this study, we focus on BLE-enabled Bluetooth 4.0 and 4.1 devices. In particular, we reviewed two heart rate monitors (Polar H7 heart rate monitor and Fitbit Charge 4) and a Bluebyte BLE keyboard. These devices are widely available in the market today and are preferred by some customers due to their affordable price. The device is advertised as Bluetooth LE, but its specifications do not include information about security of use.

We’ve noticed that consumers rarely know which version of Bluetooth their device is using. For some devices, we determine the combination only after taking the traffic, according to the specifications that come with the device, the version is not indicated (except for Bluetooth LE devices). This is a concern for private users, as different Bluetooth models provide different levels of security. The results of this work are as follows:

The rest of the thesis is organized as follows: Chapter 2 provides an overview of the Bluetooth LE architecture related to the study and security functions in the architecture. Briefly describe previous research on Bluetooth LE security. Part 3 describes the tools and methods used in the research. Section 4 presents the results of the study, followed by a discussion of the results in Section 5. Finally, Section 6 summarizes our work and provides suggestions for future research.

In this section, we describe the basics of Bluetooth LE architecture and communication. For the following discussion (and others specified), we will focus on BLE 4.0 and 4.1.

The BLE specification defines packet types with two different payloads to be sent by BLE devices. The payment is a package of advertising and information (figure 1b). Broadcast packets are used when the device is in discovery or broadcast mode. On the other hand, packet data is only used when the device has established a connection with another device.

Both packages can be used to send the requested information. However, data packets are allocated more bandwidth than broadcast packets and as a result are used when more information is needed on the device.
