After a few days with this phone, I can finally say that RIM has managed to eliminate poor quality phones. The build quality is amazing, without the loose battery cover or buttons that many users complain about on the BlackBerry 8900 and Bold.
Let’s start talking about design. Well, it’s made of plastic and rubber, like most BlackBerrys. However, I found the 8520 to be very durable with the design and feel of the phone. RIM made the phone feel good in your hand. All the side buttons have been replaced with rubberized buttons, which I absolutely adore, not only because of the look, but because of how well it blends in with the whole phone. There are also 3 multimedia buttons on the top of the phone. The middle button is the pause button, which is the mute button, while the left and right buttons are the next and back buttons for the music player. The 8520’s micro-USB port has been moved back to the top left corner of the phone, where it should be. RIM made a huge mistake by putting it in the bottom right corner of the 8900, which made the phone very annoying to use.
Call quality and signal strength are incredible, as RIM expects. I have never called and heard as clearly as other people who have heard me loud and clear. The 8520 also has three useful multimedia buttons on the top of the phone, making it a great phone for teenagers. The speaker isn’t as clear as the BlackBerry Bold, but it’s pretty decent, and with the new Ontario driving rules, it’ll be a great feature to use if you want (but not recommended) to talk while driving.
Messaging with BlackBerry makes sense. The full qwerty keyboard is small enough for people with large fingers, but the spacing between each key makes typing phenomenal. Coming from a BlackBerry 8900, I have no problem getting used to it. The BlackBerry 8520 offers full support for push email and instant messaging, including Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, BlackBerry Messenger, and more. Even though it’s a low-end model, it’s quite disappointing to see a screen with a low resolution of 320 x 240, which means you can easily see every pixel.
