Get Started One of our favorite features of Windows 11, which Microsoft delivered a year after the original release, is the new volume/brightness slider. Gone are the old and hideous Windows 8 sliders that looked out of place on the new OS. Now we have slim, compact and beautiful sliders with dark/light mode support and additional privacy indicator.

Unfortunately, those who are stuck with Windows 10 or don’t want to upgrade are unlikely to get a new version of one of the most hated parts of the Windows user interface. So to fix what Microsoft won’t, it needs the help of third-party developers. Modern Flyouts, a free Microsoft Store app, is here to save the day.

Modern flyouts let you replace the old volume/brightness sliders and media controls, as well as enable notifications for lock keys (numbers, caps and scroll). Media controls and lock key support provide a better experience than Windows 11, as the latter only has media controls on the lock screen and notification center.

Apart from giving Windows 10 a better look, Modern Flyouts offers various customization options. You can set light or dark themes, personalize media controls with album art, turn individual elements on or off, and rotate charts around the screen. Windows 11 doesn’t allow resetting volume/brightness parameters, so the app gets an extra point.

It’s worth noting that Modern Flyouts is still in preview (though it’s far from a new app), so you may run into the occasional bug. However, before upgrading from Windows 10 to 11, the app was in my default apps list, and I don’t recall experiencing any stop-contract errors. Also, Modern Flyouts is a free app so you can check it out yourself.
