Getting Paid To Travel Around The World – Last year, when I was invited to speak at the World Tourism Forum in Istanbul, I was asked to talk about this question: How to create a successful travel blog?

At first glance, this question seems simple and easy. But the more I thought about it, the harder it became to find the right words. Other times I just reply, “Get a domain, find a good host, set up a blog and write some more content. But there’s a pointer out there, and it’s pretty basic:

How to measure success? We all have different metrics: traffic, social media following, branding and promotions. Success means being able to express yourself. If you have a goal – no matter how small – and you achieve it, you will succeed. But if we’re talking about business reporting, it’s probably the best measure of how well a blog is sustaining itself and generating enough revenue to support the blogger’s life. Yes, you can travel around the world for free or you can pay to travel around the world. You’d be surprised to know how many people make a career out of blogging, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting (and becoming friends with) many of them.

I don’t claim to be an expert in this field. Every day, I find myself learning more as I explore the intricacies of the blogging community and the travel industry. But I am an expert on my personal history (haha) and that’s what I’m going to tell you in this post.

Coming from a small family that had to feed and send my children to school, I know it’s not easy. It’s not easy, at least for me. This was made even more difficult because I hold a Philippine passport and had to prove my roots and financial means before I could set foot on many of my dream destinations. I can’t leave everything behind and enjoy the sunshine. I have to organize everything, organize everything I do.

We started this blog from scratch. At the time, I was at the bottom of the corporate ladder, working 8-5 as a social media marketing manager at a startup. At first I was just writing about our social outings because I couldn’t afford to go alone. No savings. I pay enough for rent, bills, and tuition for the children at home. But we’ve come a long way.

Today, Vince and I quit our day jobs and become full-time travel bloggers. We also launched another blog called PhilippineBeaches.org. This blog alone gets nearly 1 million page views each month, and both of our blogs have over 2 million social media followers. With these blogs, we can go anywhere and anytime.

So how do we do it? What I share below is what I’ve learned as a blogger and social media marketing expert for over a decade. Some of these are things I already knew before starting this blog, and some are lessons we’ve learned along the way. We’re disappointed – things worked differently – and we hope sharing them will help you avoid the same mistake.

But before I do that, let me say this: making travel writing a full-time job isn’t as glamorous as one might think. Sometimes we think that if we don’t write something, we won’t get it. Most of the time we just get along. We need to remain vigilant and have backup plans. But between this and our day job, we choose this all day long. Yes, we are always working, but no matter what we choose, we work at our own pace. We’re not encouraging you to quit your job, but if you decide to do so, plan accordingly. Here’s how we planned our trip: How to quit your job and travel. Step 1: Location

This is something most writers don’t think about. They just want a name and register a blog. But if you want to make a business out of blogging, this is the first thing you should consider.

There are tens of thousands of blogs out there, and you need to figure out what makes your story stand out. So would you like to write about this trip? Smart. The next question you should ask yourself is: How?

What will make your new blog unique? Nothing on the table? Why should readers care about your blog? Also, who is your audience? Are you writing about a specific age group, gender or social class?

Now that you know what your blog will look like, it’s time to create your blog’s identity. How do you know? What would you like your blog to be called? What does it look like and feel like?

The most important thing you need to decide in this section is the name of your blog. Easy, right? Probably not. Ha ha. I think this is the hardest part of the job. The name should fit perfectly into the niche of your blog. It’s difficult because sometimes you think you own the domain, but when you try to buy it you find out it’s no longer available and someone else is already using it.

Be careful when choosing a name. Changing the future is difficult. Building a blog’s search engine rankings largely depends on your URL (i.e. your blog’s name). If you change it, you have to start from scratch, SEO-wise. I will discuss SEO later.

But the name is just the beginning. Determine mood and style: colours, textures, views, all experiences. If you are serious, get a basic degree! These items will increase your brand memory! (Yes, you are a brand!)

Once you have a brand idea, the real work begins. As you move forward, you have to lead and keep it going. If your blog is StandUpPaddlingForever, make sure the majority of your posts are about standup paddling! This is a battle for us. Although it’s called “Poor Traveler”, we often receive offers for free nights in luxury hotels and guesthouses, but most of the time we are unable to accept the offer because it doesn’t fit our blog.

There are many options offering different plans at different prices. We don’t have any proof because we haven’t tried the big ones, so we can’t compare. But the process is the same.

There are many other blogging platforms, but I highly recommend WordPress. I have been blogging since 2005 and have tried other platforms but WordPress is the best.

The “theme” is how your blog looks to your readers. Some programs and other features will appear. Some require additional plugins. You can purchase a “Premium” theme or create a custom design.

But since you’re just starting out and don’t know much, choose one of the thousands of free themes available! In your WordPress dashboard, hover over the Themes link in the side menu, click Themes, and start browsing.

These are preset themes, so choose the one closest to your brand vision. Once your blog has enough content, you can upgrade it to a paid plan.

As much as I’m tired of hearing it, there’s a reason industry leaders keep crying – because it’s the truth. And this is often overlooked. Yes, every once in a while someone breaks the internet because of their game, personality, or genes, but they rise and fall faster than your first date. If you’re after longevity, focus on content. A sustainable online career depends on how much value you add to your readers’ experience.

Whether you’re posting a video, photo, or article, and whether your purpose is to inform, entertain, or inspire, it’s important to remember the following:

One of the reasons I partnered with Vins is our background. Before we became full-time writers, Vins was a trained SEO expert and I was the head of social media for several large companies in the ASEAN region. When we combine our skills to harness the power of search and social media, we succeed in engaging our audience.

Social media is a complex monster. Even after many years of experience, I can’t claim to be an expert on this because it’s always changing. But the basic principles are the same.
