This document introduces the CSC Google Earth project, a service that allows you to visualize CSC data in the sky with Sky in Google Earth. We believe this initiative is the first real-world use of Google Earth mission data. Searching the sky by source name or coordinates is a quick and easy way to find out if CSC Release 1 includes lunar observations of a source.

Last Update: March 3, 2011 – CSC KML version 1.2 has been updated mainly for infrastructure changes and cleanups. The fields to view all “processed” observations have been updated to include an additional 165 observations not included in the previous CSC KML 1.1 release.

Downloading and using the CSC to Sky interface on Google Earth is easy – just upload a CSC KML file
File brings images from the Moon source catalog just a click away. Field of view information is also available to see the footprint of each observation on the sky.

Image contours representing the area of lunar observation can be faded with the Google Earth transparency slider. Hovering the mouse over the CSC sky will highlight individual observations in red, and with a click, an “Observation ID” box will appear with the name of the target object and the observation identifier (Chandra ObsID).
You can zoom in on the images using the +/- navigation bar or the mouse button to view the 3-color ACIS soft-medium-hard images and enlarged HRC images from the catalog. In expanded view, you can access the list of catalog resource properties for an individual resource by clicking the yellow “CXO” icon above. All you need is Google Earth and the latest version of CSC KML to navigate the lunar sky.

CSC data is available on Google Earth in a KML (Keyhole Markup Language) file, a file that can be viewed in the Google Earth geo browser.
Google Earth handles KML files in the same way that web browsers handle HTML and XML files: you can create a KML file containing tag structures with names and attributes for specific display purposes in Google Earth, Google Maps, and other applications.
PNG images are used in CSC KML because this format is supported by Google Earth’s image transparency feature. Because earlier versions of Google Earth do not support PNG on some platforms, it is recommended to download the latest version of Google Earth for use with CSC KML files, version 6.

If the Google Earth window does not open automatically after you download the CSC KML to your computer and you have downloaded and installed the full Google Earth application, please do the following:
After downloading the CSC KML to your computer, open the Google Earth application and select “Open” from the File menu to download the CSC KML file to your computer.

The file lists the CSC Release 1.1 core sources currently displayed on the screen. Yellow “CXO” location markers are displayed with each main source when the view is zoomed in approximately 2 degrees. The subfolders contain a list of lunar ObsIDs sorted by the same number, the first with the field indicator, the second with the corresponding 3-color images based on the instrument’s energy range. Check the box next to it
