A green economy, according to the United Nations, is “low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive”. In other words, a green economy is about living, working and growing while protecting the environment and using the limited resources available as efficiently and sustainably as possible.

In Singapore, we are also bringing sustainability to the way we work, play and live through the Singapore Green Plan 2030, launched in February 2021. This plan will help many local businesses restructure to adopt environmentally friendly technologies and practices and encourage green business operations environment. According to Singapore’s first-ever Future Skills Demand report in the Future Economy Report, the green economy has been identified as one of Singapore’s three growth areas, along with the digital economy and the care economy.
Based on the translation services market, the report covers the top 20 priority binding techniques for each of the three growth sectors. These are skills required for most jobs in all sectors of every economy.
We encourage individuals to use it to organize their needs and circumstances – work experiences, strengths and aspirations – and to develop and practice their skills.

Many of these cluster priority skills are needed across various sectors of a sustainable green economy. Prioritized competencies include Environmentally Friendly Process Design, Carbon Footprint Management, and Sustainability Management.
Today, more than 450 jobs across 17 sectors require these skills as a priority. These sectors range from manufacturing, trade and connectivity to information and communications technology, financial services, hospitality and the built environment.
These priority skills, given that they are needed in most roles across sectors, are more easily transferable. Having these skills opens up many job opportunities, such as environmental, health and safety manager or sustainability manager in various sectors.
On the other hand, there are more important competencies related to certain roles. This skill group includes green building and facilities management, sustainable food production design, sustainable engineering, and solar photovoltaic system design.

The skills of this group are most needed in certain areas, such as the environment, power and energy, agricultural engineering and technology. These sector-specific skills are important to perform well.
For Singapore to become green, the built environment has an important role. In a highly urbanized country like Singapore, buildings contribute more than 20% of our emissions. Green buildings are a big part of any climate change mitigation plan, so it is important to build and operate them in an environmentally friendly way.
With the transformation of the built environment sector, priority skills such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications, Development and Implementation of Environmental Management System Frameworks, Implementation of Green Building Strategies, Sustainable Engineering, and Green Facilities Management are urgently needed.
Having these skills can open up opportunities for demanding job roles such as Facilities Engineer/Manager, Civil Assistant and Structural Engineer/Mechanical Engineer or Sustainability Manager.
