Iphone 6 Camera Application – This weekend’s discussion about the Sony a6300 got me thinking about the iPhone camera and how great it can be when used properly. Our very own Ben Lovejoy shared his tips for taking great iPhone photos a few months ago, and now I’m sharing 10 tips for taking better iPhone photos.
It sounds obvious, but you wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve taken a picture only to realize my glasses were bad or dirty. Check your iPhone screen regularly for dirt and debris. This is especially important for large iPhones because the lip of the camera makes it easy to catch dirt.

Also, while we’re on the subject of cleaning, be sure to clean your screen. If you can’t see clearly what you’re photographing because of the blur, this can affect your ability to take the photos you want.

Because the iPhone has a blank screen, it doesn’t have a fast moving feature. Digital migration is not really “immigration”. Cut the image and burn it. This is why digitally zoomed images have grain and pixels. Digital photography has its advantages, but you don’t need to use it in every shooting situation.
Get closer to your subject instead of relying on digital zoom. Not only does this allow you to capture subjects up close, but it also allows you to take advantage of the iPhone’s f/2.2 aperture. Zooming in and focusing on a foreground or background creates separation that allows for depth of field.
Just because you should avoid using digital zoom for your photos doesn’t mean you can’t use that feature to your photos’ advantage. Use digital zoom to lock focus on one part of the frame, then zoom out again to capture the image.
Even though the iPhone has a fixed aperture, you can still adjust the exposure manually, which is a way to change the ISO value and shutter speed. Unfortunately, no one controls such values and you have to rely only on exposed slides.

Click up or down in the viewfinder to adjust exposure. You’ll see the exposure slider move with your panning motion, and depending on how you move the slider, you’ll see whether the image is overexposed or underexposed.
Instead of just clicking to focus, tap and hold the viewfinder to lock the exposure and focus. When locked, you can use the exposure slider to change the exposure while the eye is locked.
Motion can be the enemy of portrait photography, which is why we have features like optical image stabilization. You can reduce the motion by taking pictures by using the physical volume keys to take pictures. Better yet, connect a pair of EarPods and use the volume button on the inside to trigger the shutter.

If your subject can move, using Burst mode will increase your chances of capturing a photo that will last during your shooting session. Simply press and hold the shutter button to initiate burst mode. You can also use the burst mode with the iPhone’s physical volume buttons, but you can’t use the EarPod remote’s volume buttons.
HDR (High Dynamic Range) works directly from the camera app and combines three photos taken at three different exposures to create what it thinks is a “real” photo. HDR works best in neutral lighting conditions or in very close-up situations where the ambient light contrasts with the subject. To make things easier, turn on Auto HDR. It’s great to know when your iOS photos can benefit from this setting.
Of course, there are many other applications designed to add more features and functions to the iPhone camera. For videographers, there is, for example, FiLMiC Pro, a great video focus app that does a lot more than a standard camera app can. For a shooting scene, feel free to try something like the ProCam 3, which offers great features for both shooters and videographers.
