Moving Cloud Application – As organizations large and small move to the cloud, it’s important to choose the right migration strategy that aligns with business goals, minimizes disruption, and ensures a smooth transition. Here, we explore popular cloud migration strategies that help businesses optimize their migration journey. This blog post contains technical insights and migration examples.

Re-hosting (Lift-and-Shift). The fastest way to migrate involves moving applications without changing them. Ideal for organizations that want to migrate quickly but may sometimes miss cloud-specific features. It efficiently migrates applications from on-premises to cloud infrastructure without retooling. You can use tools such as the AWS Server Migration Service or the Migrate Azure tool.

For example: A medium-sized online store is moving its entire site as it is from an on-premises data center to AWS EC2 instances. Here’s a case study of moving to a serverless architecture

How To Choose The Right Cloud Service Model For Your Application

Refactoring. This means making changes to the app, such as implementing cloud-based features. Although it requires more effort, it allows for greater scalability and performance. Applications are recoded and often leverage PaaS offerings. It can use AWS Elastic Beanstalk or Azure Kubernetes for deployment, scaling and load balancing.

For example, an online gaming platform that decides to rebuild its back-end to use auto-scaling and managed databases like Amazon RDS or Azure Cosmos DB.

Platform processing. Small programs change to use some cloud functionality without major fixes. A balance between rehosting and rebuilding. This requires small changes to take advantage of the cloud. For example, moving from a traditional database to a cloud-based database.

Repurchase. moving to another product, usually a cloud-based SaaS solution. For example, moving from an on-premises CRM to a cloud-based CRM like Salesforce, or from an on-premise SharePoint system to Office 365. Migration may involve transferring data and settings.

To retire. Identify IT assets that are no longer useful and can be shut down and save money. Includes evaluation and closure of additional resources acquired through comprehensive IT audits.

For example: After an assessment, the company found that 20% of its server resources were unused and removed them to save costs.

Storage: holding specific programs or workloads temporarily or permanently in place. Some applications are stored in their current environment, but integration services such as AWS Direct Connect or Azure ExpressRoute can provide connectivity to the cloud.

Break the migration into phases Start by migrating less critical applications first, learn the process, refine the strategy, and then move on to migrating more critical applications. This reduces risk and enables continuous learning. This strategy involves migrating applications in batches, which is typically achieved using container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes or Docker Swarm.

For example: A large company with more than 500 applications migrates 50 applications per quarter, allowing for better risk management.

It is sometimes called the “big bang” migration. All resources are migrated at once, which is convenient for small businesses or those looking for a quick migration, but can be more risky than a phased migration. VM import and export tools, bulk data transfer solutions such as AWS Snowball or Azure Data Box help implement the strategy.

For example: With mobile app support, the start-up quickly migrates its entire suite to Google Cloud Platform within a week.

A combination of on-premise and cloud that allows organizations to take advantage of cloud capabilities to simultaneously store specific applications or data for security, compliance, or other business reasons. It requires VPN or separate connections between local and cloud. Consider using AWS VPN or Azure Virtual WAN.

Use multiple cloud providers to avoid vendor lock-in, increase reliability, and optimize services. Each cloud provider has unique services and pricing models, and a multipurpose strategy allows businesses to choose the best. Cloud management platforms like RightScale or Morpheus can help orchestrate.

Example: The streaming service hosts content on AWS, uses Google Cloud AI for recommendations, and Azure CDN for content delivery.

The right strategy combines an understanding of an organization’s current infrastructure, future goals, and the benefits offered by different cloud models. By carefully analyzing and choosing the right strategy, organizations can make a smooth transition and use the full potential of the cloud. Our CTO Andrew has put together a guide for CIOs and CIOs detailing what he considers the most important aspects of moving to the cloud. He shared his consulting experience and how a migration project is sold to an internal client. Last week at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo™ in Barcelona, Spain, I spoke to attendees about a topic that didn’t raise much concern. From our clients: How to know when cloud migration is best for their IT strategy?

The 7 Rs Of Cloud App Modernization

Many Oracle and SAP customers with maintenance deadlines (especially in 2025 with SAP) tell us they feel pressure to move their on-premises applications to the cloud. In my session, I addressed this concern by explaining what we consider viable options and sharing three real-life examples from our customers.

After countless conversations over the past few years, we’ve categorized four approaches that companies are using to migrate to the cloud (shown below).

When discussing enterprise applications from Oracle or SAP, these companies fall into two silos: those with no immediate plans for cloud ERP and those that do. There are two mindsets in each silo. Sean du Plessis, our Global Head of SAP Operations, introduces them specifically for SAP in his latest video.

In general, Spinnaker support clients fall into category 2 above, which we call “optimization and innovation”. Without immediate ERP Cloud plans, these companies have ignored arbitrary dates and vendor lock-in and instead optimized IT operations by moving to a third-party support provider.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Cloud Migration?

The obvious improvement is the significant IT cost savings that can be invested in innovation at the best time and circumstances for the company, not the software vendor. At the same time, these companies receive more responsive and comprehensive support from third parties whose business model is to provide software.

At the Gartner talk, I presented three examples of companies that have used the Optimize & Innovate approach. One of these was a global supplier of equipment solutions for the oil, gas, power and petrochemical industries. Let’s call it a world power.

Global Power needed to free up and direct financial and human capital within its internal Oracle team to strengthen its strategic initiatives, primarily the deployment of SAP and cloud solutions. While they were focused on their SAP migration, the company still needed 100% uptime and support for Oracle’s global applications, merge middleware and database environment, including global support for tax and regulatory reporting needs.

Result? A company very happy with their new Oracle support experience. Their internal IT resources were freed up to support Oracle’s vision to focus on strategic initiatives (Optimization), and Oracle’s seven-figure support cost savings were channeled into SAP solutions on-premises and in the cloud (Innovation).

Cloud Migration Challenges In 2023

After the presentation, I was asked to explain how the organization knew it was suitable for this approach. In my experience, the leading indicators are:

Blog’s Top 20 RFP Questions for Evaluating Third-Party Oracle and SAP Software Support Providers Gartner’s Blog Research Explores Your Options for Lowering Annual Support and Software Maintenance Costs Blog Using Oracle and SAP Third-Party Support to reduce costs as before – business, replacing legacy systems with cost-effective cloud solutions is easy. However, simply moving your systems to the cloud, commonly known as “lift and shift,” may not be the game changer for your business needs. Updating a program is more than just changing. This includes strategic optimization to increase efficiency and competitiveness. Imagine upgrading a car by sticking an old engine into a new chassis; it’s an improvement, but the real benefits come from addressing the underlying issues. Likewise, modernization is more than a change in location. It’s a comprehensive approach to ensuring your systems thrive in a dynamic cloud environment.

Many companies with legacy legacy systems already know that it probably makes sense to ditch their legacy hardware and use cheaper, more flexible cloud systems.

The Biggest Challenge In Moving Epm To The Cloud

What you may not realize is that just migrating a system like this can be a missed opportunity for an upgrade. But isn’t an upgrade a move from old hardware to the cloud?

Well, in a sense. It’s a transition from old technology to new, yes. But taking an old system and putting it into the new cloud is far from a true upgrade. If you take an engine out of an old car and put it in the body of a new car, that’s some improvement. But this car does not consume less fuel than before. All the problems caused by the old car’s engine are still present in the new car
