After both parties activate AudioProtect, the passenger will see “AudioProtect: On” displayed on the app, indicating that recording has started once the journey has begun.

The recording is paused while the passenger answers the call. When the call ends, it automatically resumes. However, recording can continue on the driver’s device.

When AudioProtect is enabled, all future journeys will be recorded if your passenger or driver has this feature enabled. This feature can be turned off using the same steps at any time before starting the trip.

If AudioProtect is disabled after the trip has started, the trip will continue to be recorded for safety. This will disable the feature for future trips.

Grab said that to ensure user privacy, recorded audio files are encrypted, stored on the device for up to five days, and automatically deleted if no security-related incidents are reported.

“The records are not accessible to passengers or drivers, only to Grab’s security team in the event of a security-related incident.”

If such an incident is reported within five days, the recording will be uploaded to Grab’s secure servers for investigation, the company added.

These files are “securely stored” for 6 months and are then automatically and permanently deleted from Grab’s servers. If the investigation continues, this six-month period may be extended.

Accredited and trained security team members will review the footage, Grab added.

“Audio Protect is designed to give users greater peace of mind by preventing face-to-face security incidents while traveling on Grab. At the same time, Grab can rely on recordings to quickly resolve security incidents,” the company said.

“Safety incidents to be investigated include accidents and verbal, physical and sexual harassment and/or abuse.”

The Audio Protect announcement comes just after International Women’s Day on March 8. Based on the company’s 2021 ESG report, Grab said in an online campaign that 99.99% of its rides are risk-free.

“For us, this is a big deal because women feel safer traveling alone,” Grab said.
