As we have already indicated, the design and construction work in its favor. Gone is the forever plastic build with the subtle chrome side bezels that we associate with the J-Phone. The Galaxy J7 Prime certainly looks premium (even more so in black).

A metal back that curves beautifully to create perfect edges, 2.5D curved glass covering the glass from head to toe, curved bezels, an attractive speaker position on the right edge, and an acceptable thinness. Profile – Overall an attractive and ergonomic handset.

At least, the flat back – with only the Samsung branding and camera module on the back – doesn’t open, so all the slots, buttons and ports are placed on the edges. Of course save the home button which also reads your fingerprint to unlock the safe (you have to press the button first).

Maximum brightness is very high, so outdoor visibility shouldn’t be a problem. However, you will have to manually adjust the brightness or check the outdoor mode as Samsung is still adamant on not adding an ambient light sensor to the J-Phone.

It should also be noted that the Galaxy On Next, which is almost identical to the Galaxy J7 Prime except for more internal storage, has warmer color tones that look better in our opinion.

RAM management is a bit aggressive. If you appreciate the convenience of running more than 2 or 3 apps in the background, the Galaxy J7 2016 may disappoint you. The software is Android Marshmallow-based TouchWiz that integrates J-series exclusive S features, Microsoft apps, Google apps and some Samsung apps as well.

The S-Planning feature and Secure Folder are some interesting additions. With S-Planning, you can save time for calls, use Battery Saver, and select contacts to forward calls when the battery is low. It works as advertised and we found it used a few times when the battery ran out but we didn’t feel like charging it.

The TouchWiz Launcher still seemed a bit heavy to us, so we replaced it with our current favorite Pixel Launcher after a few days. Nothing else to complain about.

Samsung uses the same camera module as the Galaxy J7 2016 and the performance is almost the same.

The camera captures good pictures in good lighting, whether indoors or outdoors. The shutter speed is fast and the camera also lands very quickly.

The Galaxy J7 Prime’s camera won’t give it any clear edge, but it won’t let it down either. It definitely can be improved. The more powerful Pro Mode would be a good start.

Battery backup is great. Even on a heavy usage day, where 4G LTE data was consumed most of the time, the handset used 30 to 40 percent of its battery during sleep. The battery usually lasts two full days! Also, with 5 percent battery left, we can just switch to the S power plan and not worry about missing important calls for the next few hours.

Phone quality is something Samsung takes very seriously with all of its phones. However the J7 Prime is an exception. We would rate the Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime as an average quality phone.

We liked the placement of the speaker on the left edge. No matter how we hold it, the sound doesn’t break up and the sound quality and intensity are very pleasant.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Core Review: Just Right

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime is a good proposition for beginners and intermediate users, and perhaps for anyone who appreciates tier-1 branding and associated benefits like effective after-sales support and prefers to buy from offline stores. Ample battery backup, strong all-day performance, attractive design and a well-balanced display all contribute to a satisfactory user experience. Despite these flaws, we enjoyed our time with the handset.

If you don’t mind buying from an online store, the Samsung Galaxy On Next is essentially the same handset with more internal storage and hence a better deal.

Of course, ‘best feature phones’ will appeal to many, but for beginners and average users, we have no qualms in recommending this to anyone limited by a budget of Rs. 15K to 20K.
