PHILADELPHIA: Growing up, I always thought grocery shopping was fun for adults.

Without warning, the store can pull me into a whirlwind, turning a short trip into an hour-long activity that costs more than I bargained for. I live alone, have no allergies or dietary restrictions, and am not picky about food. I can’t imagine the headache of shopping for groceries for the whole family, let alone people with different limitations and preferences.

I was intrigued when a reader emailed me last month saying he was “fantastic” about a free AI tool being offered to shoppers at a local store. While I have heard of the popular AI like ChatGPT, I didn’t know much about consumer AI. But from a reader’s description, it seemed that this tool, which I soon learned was called Quin, could help ease some of the shopping hassle.

Inside the Sprouts Farmers’ Market on South Broad Street, purple-and-white signs depict Quinn as two curved arms and an oblong face saying, “I’m here to help you find something.”

Quin is an innovative phone-based artificial intelligence technology that can answer verbal or printed questions about in-store products, including nutritional information and pricing, and help users compare products. Items can be added to a digital shopping list in a store or at home and placed on a store map.

Shop Anytime, Anywhere, In More Ways Than Ever

Nasreen Mostafazadeh, co-founder of the company, said New York-based tech startup Verneek decided to bring its technology to grocery stores because it seemed like the right time. Today, grocers must balance the lingering effects of inflation with a growing awareness of the importance of healthy eating in a Covid-conscious world.

“Food shoppers are probably the most neglected consumer group in the United States,” he said. “Food allergies, food preferences, diet choices are all that the average American has to deal with on a daily basis.

Mostafazadeh said Quinn aims to complement grocery store workers rather than replace them, giving them more time to focus on their work responsibilities, such as filling shelves, taking inventory or checking customers.

I decided to try Quinn for myself. Can artificial intelligence complicate the process of buying products? Maybe even a party?

As soon as I entered the store, I opened the camera app on my phone and scanned the QR code on the Quin sign located among the boxes of vegan cupcakes. A webpage will open with a green microphone button in the bottom corner prompting me to ask a question. (An example was given on the sign: “What is the healthiest snack for kids under $5/RM22?”).

I asked my first question. Instead of answers, I never received evening offers to update the site. God, what a mess, I thought.

Once the Sprouts connected to the guest Wi-Fi and we reloaded the site, Quinn and I were ready to go.

Armed with a list of questions designed to test Quinn, instead of repeating my usual shopping list, I wandered around the store, looking at my phone and feeling like I would go grocery shopping in the future. I spoke loudly to Quinn. I was impressed that the store understood me through the background music.

During my hour-long visit, I didn’t see any of my fellow clients doing the same, which made me feel a bit uncomfortable. The security guards and store employees asked me several times if I needed help, and I was worried that they would think I was trying to shoplift. I also hoped not to annoy other buyers.

But Quinn didn’t hesitate and successfully answered most of my questions: Which bread has the least carbs? What fruits are in season now? What fresh vegetables can you buy for less than $5? Which frozen meals have the least sodium? What is the cheapest meat per kilogram? What’s the best price for ice cream right now?

After each question, for a second or two, it will offer a series of options sorted by lowest price, unit price, or quantity of food.

Quinn was well aware of the store’s many offerings for people with dietary restrictions. There was a long list of kosher ingredients, keto snacks, and gluten-free pasta.

He recommended which olives to buy for cooking and which wines to pair with chicken and beef. He knew where to find honey and organic tampons, although I couldn’t find the best-selling brand of the latter on the shelves.

When Quinn told me which eggs, including the kosher variety with dark chocolate salted caramel, were the cheapest, he warned me that some types of chicken eggs were running out. Using the Queen card, I made my way to the egg section in the back corner of the store and found that several of the store’s cheapest 12-pack varieties were sold out. However, the shop’s brown pasture eggs cost $4.99 (RM22), a dollar more than the caged eggs Quinn had before me.

Quin updates automatically based on real-time inventory data provided by retailers, Mostafazadeh said, but hopes to integrate crowdsourcing at some point. This will allow a buyer like me to notify Quinn that an item is out of stock before the official listing is updated.

Quinn hesitated several times, as if to say, “What should I serve with beef?” and suggested peanut butter (possibly mixed with sauce, such as roast beef peanut sauce). It was even better with chicken, so I suggested serving it with Brussels sprouts. In any case, he also provided a few additional recipes, although they looked like generic options not tailored to a specific protein.

Just a few times Quinn said, “I’m sorry, but I can’t find what you’re looking for. Do you mind if you rephrase your question or ask me something else? Each time it was not about Quinn’s understanding of my words, but about the complexity of the issue.

Quinn couldn’t tell me where to find “eggs, milk and bread” as I needed blizzard gifts, although she could tell me where to find each item individually.

Another question that baffles Quinn, at least at first: “What can I cook for dinner for two tonight for less than $10 (RM44)?”

First he asked me to rephrase. So I said, less politely, “Give me a dinner recipe that costs less than $10.”

This time, she provided a list of recipes, including a list of required ingredients, places where I can find these products in the store, and their cost. However, he told me beforehand that “I can’t find products at your minimum price”, although he indicated the cooking time.

Mostafazadeh said Quinn is unable to determine the price as she calculates the cost of all the ingredients needed to make the recipe, including ingredients that many customers already have at home, such as butter, milk and spices.

Although it takes some getting used to, Quinn is pretty cool. If you’re shopping at Sprouts or another store that sells it, I’d recommend giving it a try, especially if you have a long shopping list and/or are afraid of work like I am.
