Video Processing Application Is – Altera’s VIP Suite is a set of MegaCore features that the user can easily develop custom video and image processing projects. This article highlights some of the activities performed for the project using Altera’s Cyclone V SoC and VIP kit. The following VIP megacore features were used to implement the video and image processing application:
The above setup includes 1 VGA input, 2 composite inputs and 1 SDI (serial digital video interface). Three outputs are provided, two of which are active at the same time. A composite output of two active outputs is always active. User can switch between LCD output and VGA output.

The FPGA implements the pixel-by-pixel overlay or picture-by-picture overlay using the VIP mega-function set mentioned above. Video switch Selects video input from four input video sources. The selected video input is optimized for VGA resolution (VGA, SVGA or XGA) and is protected by the integrated DDR3 with the mega frame buffer function. An alpha fusion core requires 3 layers to produce duplicated video; test pattern generator, selected input video and built-in DDR3 buffer layer. In the output path, the patch sequence replicates the output of the blender. The first output of the color plane can be sent to a VGA or LCD monitor depending on the switch selection. The second output from the patch sequence is sent to the composite output. Many mega-core VIP functions are built in between input and output to convert video from one format to another.

An additional layer can be upgraded to DDR3 using the NIR-II processor or the ARM Cortex A9 dual-core HPS processor integrated into the Cyclone V SoC. iWave has implemented a QT application that features pixel-by-pixel overlay functionality. Alpha Blender renders the rendered video and overlay based on the specified alpha values. In the output, the user gets the selected video in the QT layer.
Also, picture-in-picture overlay is available, which combines multiple video layers without considering alpha values.
