The best video editing tool depends on many factors: your technical ability and willingness to learn, your budget, and the complexity of what you hope to achieve. There isn’t one video editor that fits all, but that’s okay – the field is full of great options.

In fact, some of the best video editing software are completely free, even if you’re looking for more advanced features. And premium options often come with free trials, so you can make sure they’re right for your project before you commit.
The Best Ai Video Generators In 2023
I’ve used all kinds of video editing apps in the past to put together personal projects, and I’ve been reviewing products for professional choices over the years. For this article, I looked at over 60 video editors and tested all the top contenders. Based on my experience with the apps, here are my picks for the best video editing software for Windows, Mac, and the web.
All of our best practices collections are written by people who have spent most of their careers using, testing, and writing software. We spend dozens of hours researching and testing apps, using each app as intended and evaluating it according to the criteria set by the category. We are never paid to post our articles on any app or link to any website – we appreciate the trust our readers have to give us honest reviews of the categories and apps we review. For more details on our process, read our full description of how we choose apps to feature on the blog.
At the very least, a video editor should be compatible with your source material and allow you to make basic edits. (Some video editors will even make these basic edits for you, allowing you to edit things after the fact.) But many video edits require more advanced features. So, when I tried, I looked at several criteria to make sure I choose the best video editing software for multiple users:
I tested each video editor on a selection of 4K HDR videos of different lengths and subjects. I made basic changes to each app and installed more advanced features through their process. Finally, I’ve exported projects in many different formats and on many different platforms – you don’t want to go through an incredible process of editing only to find that you can’t export properly.

There are a growing number of AI video applications designed to create videos from scratch. They are impressive and have editing features included, but they are not what you need if you are looking for a real video editor.
So while some of my picks here use such technology, that’s not the focus of this collection. If you’re looking for a video editor or related tool, check out our selection of the best AI video generators.
Adobe Premiere Pro is a standard video editing tool from a company that specializes in creative applications like Photoshop and After Effects. It’s a very versatile tool that includes everything from making basic edits to more complex tasks like color grading, chromaticism, and object tracking.
The basic editing tools are relatively simple, and Premiere Pro manages to keep the interface clean and uncluttered. This makes learning to make simple changes a lot easier, and Adobe includes a helpful app guide that walks you through the process of setting it up for the first time.

That being said, many of the more complex features require drilling. For example, you can apply object tracking to your clips automatically or manually. Going the automatic route allows Premiere Pro to analyze and create keyframes that you can edit later. To do this, you need to learn how to create a new clip sequence and make a mask. Other forms of control include adjusting the interface to show the tools you need to use. (If you don’t know what that means, you definitely don’t need Premiere Pro.)
The good news: Premiere Pro’s popularity means there’s plenty of help at hand. Adobe has comprehensive training materials and manuals, or you can learn how to walk by watching videos and articles if you run into problems.
Premiere Pro is powerful and feature-packed, but that’s reflected in its price and subscription model. If you don’t need everything Adobe has to offer, you’re better off buying something cheaper.
If you use Adobe Creative Cloud libraries, you can monitor the video production process by connecting Adobe to . Automatically upload files to Adobe Creative Cloud Libraries, send notifications when assets are ready, and create jobs based on new assets.

DaVinci Resolve is probably the best deal for video editing. The basic version is completely free and includes many amazing professional features. DaVinci Resolve is not only a world-class video editor, but also includes a dedicated workspace for color grading, audio control, visual effects and animation.
These different workspaces are divided into tabs that run along the bottom of the page. This allows you to dive into some of the more advanced features, such as creating animations in the Fusion interface, or ignore them completely until you get down to the basics. It’s also a great way to multitask and get it all done in one app.
One thing that may confuse new users is that DaVinci Resolve has two editing applications: Cut and Edit. Both are great for adding clips to a timeline and finishing edits, but Cut focuses more on speed and usability (it includes all the basic tools you need to cut and make basic edits ), while Edit is available if needed. A tool often associated with a more sophisticated editing experience.
Since DaVinci Resolve’s popularity has grown due to its attractive price, there are plenty of resources to walk you through some of the more complex features. You’ll need them to learn how to use color keys, sync audio and video, and take advantage of the most impressive multi-camera editing applications.

The free version of DaVinci Resolve can convert 8-bit video with Ultra HD resolution (3840×2160) with a frame rate of up to 60 frames per second. You’ll also need to upgrade to the Studio version for $295, which includes full HDR support, multiple effects, and more.
DaVinci Resolve Price: Free for standard version; $295 for DaVinci Resolve Studio (usually with purchase of Blackmagic Design hardware).
Final Cut Pro is only available for Mac users (except for a cheaper and less productive iPad version that will launch in early 2023). This somewhat limits its appeal, but if you use a Mac and are looking for a professional video editor with a price to match, this might be the first editor you consider.
Unlike Adobe’s weak one-week process, Apple gives you a full 90 days to decide whether or not Final Cut Pro is worth the $299 price tag. One thing that must influence your decision is how Apple’s high-quality video editor works with the latest Mac models. Final Cut Pro is highly optimized for Apple hardware.

The result is a video editor that beats everything else on this list (except iMovie, which is effectively Final Cut Pro’s younger brother). Hovering over the image allows you to easily preview a clip before you decide to add it to your timeline. And if you’re an avid iPhone photographer, you’ll love how the app integrates with iCloud Photo Library for backup.
Most notably, Final Cut Pro now includes support for the iPhone’s cinematic mode, which allows for fine-tuning of focus and aperture.
