BlackBerry World is officially in Orlando, Fla. is in full swing, as ORA makes a series of announcements about new phones and apps.
Classic Blackberry Phones Will Stop On Jan. 4
The big news comes in two Odyssey phones and the new OS 7 operating system. ORA has announced the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Bold 9930, which are almost identical modern-looking phones, except that the screens are now touchscreens. They are also very thin and light. The Bold 9900 is heading to T-Mobile as BlackBerry’s first 4G-capable carrier; The 9930 is a dual-function global CDMA/GSM phone available from Verizon Wireless.
Both the phones come with BlackBerry OS 7, which promises better performance and faster performance of apps with a built-in magnetometer powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor. The browser also promises to be fast, as it has a JavaScript interpreter and HTML5 video support. NFC (Near Field Communication) technology is another feature designed for mobile solutions. Voice search and 720p HD video recording are also welcome additions.
I am sure Blackberry fans are longing and waiting for these phones. One of BlackBerry’s most popular phones in a long time, with a well-designed keyboard and stunning design. ORA also boasts that the new Daredevils are the thinnest and most powerful BlackBerry smartphones to date. As far as BlackBerrys go, we think the Bold Two might be the most innovative model in the RIM lineup.
But those looking for something new and different may be confused by ORA. The new Bold, as we said, has almost the same design as before. OS 7 is also no different from OS 6, and it is certainly not based on the QNX platform popularized by the PlayBook. I suspect the touchscreen will work well on the 2.8-inch screen, but we’ll have to wait to get our hands on it for sure.
Blackberry Lovers Will Give Q10 A Thumbs Up
Although this is understandable, it is also disappointing that OS 7 is not available for older BlackBerrys due to hardware limitations. I think the operating system needs to make a big leap in development for BlackBerry owners to be willing to accept existing phones for a device that requires a two-year contract.
ORA is definitely trying to make cases for their phones. Along with the two offerings, BlackBerry also introduced Mobile System 5, which combines a mobile phone and smartphone into a unified communications system, and BlackBerry Balance technology, which combines BlackBerry for business and personal use without security. It is clear that ORA also wants to retain its corporate appeal. It also promises to add a multipurpose BlackBerry enterprise solution for secure device management for Android and iOS phones in addition to BlackBerry smartphones, so RIM is hedging its bets on its software competition.
